"Do you love the color of the sky?" Photography Exhibition by Zarema Khalilova

PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION

«Do you love the color of the sky?»

By Zarema Khalilova

6x6 Centre for Photography, Limassol

Official Opening: Friday, 26 May 2023, 7p.m.

Exhibition Duration: 26 May - 2 June 2023

Zarema Khalilova presents her first solo photography exhibition at 6x6 Centre for Photography, in Limassol, titled Do you love the color of the sky? The exhibition opens officially on Friday, 26th May 2023 (7 - 9p.m.) and will remain open until Friday, 2nd June 2023, with free entrance.

Visiting Hours:

Monday - Friday 9:00 - 18:00, Saturday: 10:00 - 15:00, Sunday 15:00 – 19:00

About the artist

Zarema, a self-taught artist with a background in software engineering, is of Kabardian heritage. She was born in Nalchik and raised in the far north of Russia.

Now based in Limassol, Cyprus, her work draws from her family's turbulent history and the dramatic changes in her surroundings. Zarema emphasizes beauty in light, color, and texture. Her work is an aesthetic exploration rather than a narrative, a visual journey through personal and collective memory.

"Do you love the color of the sky?" marks her debut as an exhibiting artist.

Exhibition Statement

"Do you love the color of the sky?" is a photographic exploration of the contrasting skies of northern Russia and Cyprus. Raised in the Far North of Russia with the sun absent for six weeks of the year, I experienced the sky as a canvas of white or black.

My subsequent migration to Saint Petersburg reinforced this color palette. I recall the sky above the city as consistently grey.

However, a sudden shift in my life led me to flee to Cyprus. Here, I met an amazingly different sky – one that was vibrant, bright, and filled with shades of blue.

This exhibition captures the transformation of the skies from the monochromatic world of my past to the vivid hues of my present. The photographs serve as a visual metaphor for personal growth, adaptation, and the profound impact of one's surroundings.

Through my journey from the Far North of Russia to the sun-soaked Mediterranean island of Cyprus, I have discovered the beauty and diversity of the skies above us.

This collection of Giclée prints aims to capture the essence of this journey and invite viewers to reflect on the transformative power of the environments in which we live.

"THE MIRROR OF CONFLICT" Photography Exhibition

«The Mirror of Conflict»

Photography Exhibition

by Nico Carpentier

6x6 Centre for Photography, Limassol

Opening Night: Friday, 20 January 2023, 18:00

Exhibition Duration: 20 - 29 January 2023

The exhibition “The Mirror of Conflict” is a creation of the Belgian Prague-based university professor Nico Carpentier, who is known for the combination of academic analysis and artistic practice.

The 93 photographs, grouped on 33 metal stands, address the memorials of Cyprus, and how they intersect with the prevailing ideologies in the southern and northern parts of the island. It is an academic and artistic investigation of how memorials communicate dominant ways of thinking, but also how they sometimes critique them. The exhibition also investigates how the memorials in the southern and northern parts of the Cyprus relate to each other, and how similar and different they are.

As Nico Carpentier explains: “We see these statues and memorials everywhere in Cyprus, but we don’t pay enough attention to them, and to what they really tell us. They are voices of the past, the present and the future, and we should listen to them, as they make us understand ourselves better.”

“The Mirror of Conflict” runs from 20 to 29 January 2023, at 6x6 Centre for Photography. The opening will take place on Friday 20 January 2023, from 18:00-21:30. Opening Hours: Saturday: 10:00-14:00; Sunday: 15:00-19:00; Monday - Tuesday - Thursday: 09:00-18:00; Wednesday & Friday: 09:00-14:00.
