“THE INTERNATIONAL GARDEN PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR” Photography Exhibition

6x6 Centre for Photography proudly presents this exhibition, in collaboration with the prestigious International Garden Photographer of the Year (IGPOTY). This is the world’s premier photography exhibition for gardens, plants and the green environment, resulting from a worldwide photography competition. It is annually held by IGPOTY in association with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, United Kingdom. 

The exhibition aims to celebrate photography as a work of art while at the same time it promotes environmental responsibility, showcasing many images of plants and flowers that are under increasing threat from human activities and a changing environment. The exhibition at 6x6 will feature many of the winners and finalists of the 2014 competition, and will include breathtaking photographs from all over the world. The competition categories on show will be: ‘Beautiful Gardens’, ‘Wildlife in the Garden’, ‘Monochrome’, ‘Macro Art’, and ‘The Beauty of Plants’. IGPOTY founder Philip Smithsaid: “We are delighted to be bringing this wonderful exhibition to Cyprus for the first time. We hope it will inspire all visitors and local photographers to explore the creative possibilities of our green planet.” 

In the framework of the exhibition, IGPOTY CEO and world acclaimed British photographer Tyrone McGlinchey, will deliver apractical photography workshop entitled, «Creative Photography in the Garden». ‘BUILDING IMAGES’ The Arcaid Images Architectural Photography Awards

6x6 Centre for Photography in collaboration with Arcaid Images is hosting the internationally acclaimed Architectural Photography exhibition ‘BUILDING IMAGES’, the Arcaid Images Architectural Photography Awards 2014, an exhibition of the best architectural photography worldwide.

The Arcaid Images Architectural Photographer of the year Award highlights the expertise of the specialist architectural photographer, translating the sophistication of architecture into a readable and understandable two dimensions, to explain and extol the character, detail and environment of the project. The shortlisted photographs for the Arcaid Images Architectural Photography Awards 2014 were announced at the World Architecture Festival in Singapore, last October. 

The awards are supported by Sto and the World Architecture Festival. This is the first time that they are being presented in Cyprus, in an exhibition featuring the finalists.

Norwegian artist Froydis Lynaas and British photographer Beren Gazmararian co-present the exhibitions ‘Reflections’ and ‘Memories’ respectively, at 6x6 Centre for Photography in Limassol. The exhibitions will open on Friday, October 10th, at 7p.m. and will remain open until October 17th, 2014.
 
A long lasting friendship and a strong relationship with Cyprus is what connects the two women, who have both chosen the island as the place where they live and create.  
 
About the artists:
Froydis Lynaas
Frøydis Lynaas is a Norwegian artist, educated in Norway. She left Norway in 1998, and has been living in Cyprus for the past twelve years. Her paintings reflect different aspects of modern life, dreams and way of thinking. The human being itself is, for her, a source of inspiration. “We are bombarded with information and news every day. The world seems to be falling apart, and there is an atmosphere of stress and anxiety. People are occupied with too many things like social media, smartphones, money and work, and try to sort out their relationships and stressful lives without focusing on the things that really matter such as living in love and harmony which makes life meaningful. The essence is to be true to ourselves, family and friends, and it is vital to listen to our inner voice”.

Beren Gazmararian
Beren Gazmararian is a London based photographer who maintains a strong connection with Cyprus as she spends much of her time on the Island and specifically in Vouni village. She specialises in portrait photography as she finds people an endless source of fascination. Beren is also a passionate traveller and on her travels she captures the world with her camera. This exhibition is a small collection of her travels and memories.

Exhibition Duration: 12th June - 14th July 2014

A photo exhibition through the lens of Christina Drakos was presented at 6x6 Centre for Photography in Limassol. The exhibition was inaugurated by the Mayor of Limassol,
Mr. Andreas Christou. All the proceeds were donated to Sagapo Children’s Foundation, aiming to support the programme «Free hands» in Limassol.

Christina Drakos, the renowned Cypriot photographer, showcased her latest photographic work, featuring photos from her journeys in various countries of the world. Regarding her exhibition entitled «Life is a journey», the artist says: «Like any other form of art, photography creates its own reality. It captures the tension of the moment in a uniquely direct, vivid and spontaneous way». Travelling around the world, I photographed nature and its grandeur in different corners of the planet: from Patagonia to Peru, from Canada to Myanmar, India and the Middle East. «Anything can happen while travelling. Even nothing at all».

“One Day in History” won L’Iris d’Or Award at the Sony world photography awards 2013.

In Norway, the 22nd of July 2011 has etched itself into the collective and private memory forever. That day a car bomb killed eight people and damaged the executive government quarter in Oslo; few hours later, 69 young people were killed at a summer camp on the island of Utøya. The camp was organized by AUF, the youth
division of the ruling Norwegian Labour Party. The perpetrator was a Norwegian right-wing extremist.

Around 600 people survived the attacks on Utøya, more than half of them under the age of 18. Now they have returned to their normal lives, spread all over the country, but for many life will never be quite the same. The young survivors will live on with their scars — both visible and mental — many of which may never fully heal. A whole generation, on the threshold of adulthood, have been marked for life by acts rooted in an ideology that many consider the greatest threat to modern democracy.

Around 1950, families in small and remote fishing villages in Lofoten, Northern Norway, were offered a lump sum from the Government to leave their homes and relocate to more central places. They also committed never to return and resettle. This was part of the governmental plan to centralize and modernize the nation after the Second World War. Communities that had survived for centuries in a hostile environment on the border between steep mountains and rough sea, totally isolated during the winter months, collectively decided to leave.
Neighbors and friends through generations packed everything they owned and left their homes and each other. Villages were totally abandoned within months. Due to shortage of building materials, they dismantled their houses and brought their homes with them as well, leaving only foundations. The traditional self-sufficient ways of life were lost, and a part of the coastal culture with it.
Today, 60 years later, nature has reclaimed the areas. Looking closer however, signs of lived lives still remain; stone fences and foundations still stand, surrounded by hidden paths and traces of gardens with herbs and flowers.

In this photographic project, I am bringing families and their lives back to the villages they once lived. Historic photographs from these places are returned to where they once were taken, linking past and present. The project is about passing of time, history, destinies and changes in society. Pictures and their histories are from descendants of those in the pictures.

«ONE DAY IN HISTORY» by Andrea Gjestvang and
«ECHOES» by Hebe Robinson

The opening was attended by the Hon. Consul–General of the Norwegian Consulate in Cyprus, Mr Panayiotis Antoniades.

The two Exhibitions were presented at the Main Programme of Exhibitions of the Athens Photo Festival 2013, which took place at “Technopolis” of the City of Athens and at the Municipal Gallery of the City of Athens. Athens Photo Festival (former International Month of Photography in Athens), took place during October - November 2013. It is the annual festival of photography in Greece and a premier cultural event in Athens, established in 1987 by the Hellenic Centre for Photography. It is the first and longest-running international festival of photography and related media in Greece, and one of the five oldest of its kind in the world.

Photographs by members of the Rotary Club of Famagusta: Orthodoxos Ortodoxou, Katina Shiakalli, Chris Papavassiliou and Mrs. Ritsa Papaleontiou.

The proceeds from the sale of the photographs went to the Scholarships Fund of the Rotary Club of Famagusta and to the Limassol Child Welfare Association "Nipiokomikos".
 

New Talent Show Vol. I

6x6 Centre for Photography presents a photography exhibition by three emerging photographers: Sarah Malian, Pavlos Vrionides and Silvio Rusmigo.  

Sarah Malian has worked and lived extensively in the Gaza Strip over the last decade, and her body of work aims to show a different side to the media stereotypes and news coverage of the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians.

Pavlos Vrionides is exhibiting photographs which fall under the photoreportage category, placing particular emphasis on the constantly developing urban scenery of Cyprus. Pavlos has been working as a press photographer for the past years in Cyprus.
 
Silvio Rusmigo is presenting a selection of color images captured while on expeditions exploring outdoor Cyprus. His work reveals aspects of the island’s small-scale beauty, which often require an attentive look to be truly noticed and appreciated.
    
6x6 Centre for Photography aims to encourage and promote the work of emerging photographers, mainly through photography exhibitions. New Talent Show Volume I will be followed by a series of similar upcoming exhibitions, exhibiting exclusively the works of young and emerging photographers.
